Why Tauck Tours and Cruises? The Tauck Difference!

Updated: May 26

Why Tauck Tours and Cruises?

Maybe you've heard of Tauck or seen their ads and thought, "They're only for stuffy, old people." That was my impression too—until I went to my education session with Tauck at the 2025 ASTA River Cruise Expo.

Let me tell you, I was amazed, both by the friendliness of the Tauck employees and by the type of travel that they offer.

Below is a video that talks about the Tauck Difference (scroll down a bit after you click on the link).

Everything is included. And I mean everything. Airport transfers, gratuities, shore excursions (often more than one option per day), high-quality meals and wine, even special cultural events that are always a step above what you would get with other companies. There’s no nickel-and-diming or surprise charges at the end of the trip. You can truly relax and immerse yourself in the experience.

In 2025, Tauck is celebrating its 100th anniversary, and it’s not just a number—they’ve spent a century perfecting the art of travel. What started as a guided tour through New England in 1925 has grown into one of the most respected and innovative travel companies in the world. Their longevity speaks volumes, but what really sets them apart is their philosophy and they take it to heart: How you see the world matters.”

Let’s talk about river cruising

One of the biggest differences you’ll notice right away is the number of people on board. Tauck charters river ships that could carry around 190 passengers—but they only put 130 max guests on board. That means more space, more personal attention from the crew, and a much more relaxed, uncrowded experience. You’re not elbowing for a seat or waiting in line at the buffet. Everything feels a bit more refined, yet still incredibly friendly and approachable.

Solo Travelers - The Tauck Difference

Tauck also goes the extra mile for solo travelers—something that really impressed me. Unlike many cruise lines that require solo travelers to book a double room, Tauck has specially sized and priced solo cabins on many of their river cruises and land journeys. Sometimes these cabins even include waived or reduced solo supplement fees, making it far more affordable for solo adventurers to enjoy the same exceptional experience as everyone else. Whether you're traveling alone by choice or circumstance, Tauck makes you feel included and welcome.

And their land tours?

They are just as impressive as their river cruises. Tauck’s guided tours aren’t just about sightseeing—they’re about storytelling, connection, and access. They partner with locals, historians, and cultural institutions to give guests insider experiences you’d never be able to arrange on your own and that other tour companies don't provide. Think private after-hours visits to museums, dining in castles, and behind-the-scenes access that makes you feel like a VIP.

Types of travel with Tauck

They also have small-group journeys and family-friendly trips, like their Tauck Bridges program, so there’s truly something for everyone. The Tauck Bridges Family Adventures is designed specifically for families who want to explore the world together across generations. Think: grandparents, parents, kids—all having fun and learning together, minus the hassle.

🌉 What is Tauck Bridges Family Adventures?

Tauck Bridges is a family-focused collection of land tours, river cruises, and small-ship cruises tailored to be engaging, enriching, and fun for travelers of all ages—from kids to grandparents.

These aren't just "family-friendly" add-ons—they're built from the ground up with families in mind.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 What Makes Tauck Bridges Special?

Kid-Approved Activities Things like scavenger hunts at the Louvre, chocolate-making workshops in Switzerland, gladiator lessons in Rome, or wildlife safaris in Africa. Each day has interactive, hands-on adventures.

Worry-Free for Parents & Grandparents Everything is pre-arranged and included—meals, admissions, transfers, even gratuities. So the grown-ups can relax and enjoy the experience too.

Tauck Directors Who “Get” Kids The tour leaders are specially trained to work with children and multigenerational families. They’re pros at balancing education with fun.

Built-in Bonding Time Trips are paced for families, with time to connect, play, and explore together (but not be rushed like on traditional tours).

River & Small Ship Family Cruises Bridges also includes special family-friendly departures on Danube and Rhine river cruises, and even Galápagos and Alaska cruises—where the ship becomes part of the fun!

Did you notice that I used the term "chartered" above regarding their ships? I looked into that and here is what I found out:

Tauck River Cruises

Tauck does not own the river ships directly—they charter them exclusively through long-term partnerships, most notably with Scylla AG, a Swiss company that owns and operates a fleet of luxury river cruise ships. Tauck then fully customizes the onboard experience—from the décor to the staffing and itinerary execution—so it feels like a Tauck ship through and through.

  • 🧑‍✈️ Tauck provides their own Cruise Directors (Tour Directors) on board.

  • 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 They control the entire guest experience, excursions, and onboard programming.

  • 🛏️ Some ships are built or configured specifically to Tauck’s specs (including solo cabins and fewer guests).

Tauck Small Ship Cruises (Ocean)

Tauck charters small ocean vessels from premium lines like:

  • Ponant (luxury French yachts)

  • Windstar

  • Silversea

  • Explora Journeys (newer partnership)

Again, they charter space and layer on their signature all-inclusive, guided experience with Tauck Directors and VIP excursions.

After learning more, I can honestly say that Tauck is one of the most thoughtful, and experience-rich companies out there—without feeling pretentious or overly formal. Whether you’re new to guided travel or looking to upgrade your usual experience, Tauck is absolutely worth a closer look.

Sometimes we just need a little education to move past our assumptions. I know I did—and I’m so glad I took the time to learn more.
